Longest Day Tour in Europe: Monsters, Mountains, and Massacres

When faced with the predicament of a cancelled roadtrip through the highlands, there are few last-minute options to see the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. After hours of tireless research, the best, budget-friendly choice that we found was the Monsters, Mountains, and Massacres tour with Highland Experience Tours.

Generally, we tend to stay away from group tours but this particular day tour was too enticing to resist. Featuring long, beautiful drives that take you through the Highlands, Cairngorm Mountains, and Glencoe, this tour gives you a day long look at the majesty of the Scottish Highlands.

The day begins early with an 8am meeting time in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic neighborhood at the foot of the castle. After booking, the confirmation email states that it is recommended for you to arrive 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled departure time. If you want a good seat (or to sit with your traveling companion) make sure that you follow this advice.

As you depart you will make a quick pit stop for coffee and ATMs (in case you don’t carry much cash while traveling and planned on making purchases) in Pitlochry. Quiche and Coffee from Morton’s Coffee Lounge are the perfect takeaway for while you’re sitting back and enjoying the next couple of hours on the road.14369991_10155255163426040_5337568156058830655_n

While stopped in Pitlochry, tickets are available for the Loch Ness Cruise excursion and can be purchased through your guide.

Continuing north, you will be transported into the Highlands with stories and overviews of the tumultuous and bloody Scottish history.

Before arriving at Loch Ness, where there will be an hour lunch break, the van briefly passes through the Capitol of the Highlands, Inverness.

While stopped for lunch at Loch Ness, you are given the option of dining in the hotel’s restaurant or embarking on an hour-long cruise of the loch with beautiful panoramas, a quick stop at one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, Urquhart Castle, and a chance to do some Nessie spotting.

Following the relaxing and awe-inspiring cruise, you are quickly whisked away towards the mountain range containing Ben Nevis and the enchanting Glencoe region.

As the sun sets on Scotland towards the end of your tour, the mist begins to fall making the drive back to Edinburgh absolutely magical, the perfect end to a long day on the road.
